Kids Encouraged to Lie Online?

Social networking sites, like Facebook, have been reporting an alarming number of underage kids (ages 7-12) creating accounts and using their sites. Studies indicate that 87% of parents are aware that their underage child is on Facebook, while 66% of them helped their kid lie to bypass age restrictions. This becomes a problem when kids are encouraged to lie and disregard safety policies at such a young age. In the same way that we teach kids to be aware when crossing the street, we need to teach them about Internet safety.

  1. Great post. I am the tough mom who would not let my kids join Facebook until they were 13, and felt like the lone hold out.
