.XPS Documents and Printing

Four patrons came in on Sunday 11/6 trying to print documents saved as .xps and were unable to from patron computers. Every PSS at Southglenn worked on this problem (Debbie, Rosie, Jane, Sherry, Emily) and had a hard time coming up with a solution because we were all unfamiliar with this new format. We all tried converting the .xps to a pdf, html, doc, rich text and were still unable to print. A .xps document viewer is needed on the computer in order to successfully print the document. It seems that .xps may be the new Windows' default file when saving an internet document. .Xps is Windows version of a pdf. In order for the patrons to print, they had to email the attachment to a staff member who was able to print it from a staff computer. It would greatly help staff members and patrons if the .xps document viewer was installed on patron computers.

  1. Great explanation, Emily. It was very frustrating and disappointing to find that everything we suggested as a probable "fix" wouldn't work as we were used to.

  2. Thanks for posting this, Emily. I had been unfamiliar with .xps documents until I came into work recently and co-workers were abuzz with the problems it was creating. I did go online to try to learn more about it. Hopefully IT people will soon install the document viewer needed to eliminate problems.

  3. Turns out, the .xps document problem we were having at Southglenn was a printer software problem instead. Our patron computers were not communicating with the Time and Print Management System indicated by a gray printer icon in the bottom right corner. Since the PCs and the printers were not communicating, the only printer option was the .xps document viewer (even though the documents were not .xps). DS came and reconfigured the printer software and our .xps document problem is now fixed and patrons can print their documents once again!
